The Ulster Historical Foundation was commissioned by Ballymena Borough Council (now part of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council) to provide content for two historic trails relating to the Mid Antrim area. One related to pre-Reformation church sites and the other to the local story of the Covenanters. The research involved an investigation of the archaeology and history of the sites as well as studies of the key individuals associated with them.
The pre-Reformation churchyard trail features the following locations: Ahoghill, Dunaghy (Clough), Kirkinriola, Skerry, Racavan, St Saviour’s (Connor) and Ballyclug. The Covenanter trail includes these sites of interest: the Round Hole at Laymore, the Alexander Peden Monument at Glenwherry, Kellswater Reformed Presbyterian Church and Cullybackey Reformed Presbyterian Church. The information provided was then used in a booklet produced by the Council.
