Our first book was Ulster Emigration to Colonial America, 1718–1775, by R.J. Dickson, a volume that has never been out of print and continues to be considered the classic study of this period of migration. In 1969, we published Essays in Scotch-Irish History, edited by E.R.R. Green, then Senior Lecturer in History at Manchester University. The third volume in our Historical Series was Scottish Migration to Ulster in the Reign of James, by Michael Perceval-Maxwell, published in 1973, another volume that continues in print such is the continuing demand for it. Since then, the Foundation has published many more books on different aspects of our past, often telling the story of forgotten individuals or historical themes that are often overlooked.

In 1966 the Foundation published the first of over 30 volumes of gravestone inscriptions, each of the edited by Professor R.S.J. Clarke. Most of these books cover County Down, with four each for Belfast and County Antrim. The more recent volumes include source guides for the areas covered.

On our "Discover" area of this website you can read about our six-volume History of the Irish Parliament, 1692–1800, edited by Professor Edith Johnston-Liik, a major work containing biographical sketches of over 2,000 MPs in the old Irish House of Commons.

Our genealogical titles include two books by Ian Maxwell on researching ancestors in counties Armagh (2000) and Down (2004) and three volumes by our Research Director, Dr William Roulston. The first of these, Researching Scots-Irish Ancestors, 1600–1800, was originally published in 2005 with a substantially revised and expanded second edition appearing in 2018. It provides a detailed overview of pre-1800 records for tracing your roots in the north of Ireland, including a parish by parish listing of available sources. Other genealogical titles by Dr Roulston include Researching Presbyterian Ancestors in Ireland (2020) and Researching Farming Ancestors in Ireland (2021).

The Foundation has published more than a dozen volumes provide brief biographical details of members of the clergy from dioceses across Ireland. Nearly all of these volumes cover the clergy of the Church of Ireland. Some of them include reprints of Canon J.B. Leslie's books published in the first half of the twentieth century with new biographies compiled by Canon D.W.T. Crooks bringing the story up to the present day, while others were never before printed.
