The Ulster Historical Foundation is one of the leading publishers on the island of Ireland and, as far as production values are concerned, is second to none for the quality of its books. Since 1966 the Foundation has been publishing books that look at the story of the people of Ulster and the relationship between the north of Ireland and the rest of the world.

In 1998, the Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society initiated a publications programme and subsequently entered into a partnership with the Ulster Historical Foundation to publish monographs on the broad theme of the history of Belfast and Ulster.
