Personal face-to-face Consultation

If you are tracing your ancestors in Ireland, a face-to-face consultation with a member of our experienced research team could save you a considerable amount of time and greatly increase your chances of success.

During a consultation, you will receive research advice and guidance from a professional genealogist who will use their Irish family history knowledge and archival experience to help solve your family tree puzzles.

A consultation is suitable for both the beginner needing guidance on how/where to start and the more experienced researcher who has come up against a “brick wall” in their research.

A personal consultation with the Ulster Historical Foundation is the perfect way to start a research trip as you will leave with a list of documents to examine, saving you time when you are at the archives.

[PLEASE NOTE: Consultations are not available on the following dates in 2025 due to our family history conferences:

Monday 23 - Wednesday 25 June; Monday 01 - Friday 05 September and Monday 27 - Wednesday 29 October]

An hour-long consultation with one of our researchers is priced at £53 (£43 for Guild members) and will take place in the Foundation’s Research Centre in Newtownards, Co. Down, Northern Ireland.

For consultations that run beyond one hour the additional time is charged at the same rate (£50/£40 per hour), based on increments of 15 mins

During the consultation you will work side by side with one of our professional genealogists who will:

Assess your family information
Answer any queries you may have
Offer advice and tips for research
Demonstrate useful websites
Highlight useful practical and contextual sources
Guide you through various online genealogical databases
Offer research strategies and guidance
Compile a list of records to be examined as the next step in your research
Discuss any challenges you might face in your research
Work with you on furthering your family history research.

An hour-long consultation with one of our researchers is priced at £50 (£40 for Guild members) and will take place in the Foundation’s Research Centre in Newtownards, Co. Down, Northern Ireland.

If you feel that a longer consultation may prove beneficial to your research, you will be able to talk with the researcher about continuing the session past the hour. Our researcher will be able to advise you on the costs and value of doing so.
