Our Family History Reports provide a profile of your ancestors that is interpretative as well as factual and that is based on a close examination of the documentary and archival evidence. Our researchers will:
- Examine original documents and microfilm copies of records in archives and libraries such as the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), the General Register Office of Northern Ireland (GRONI) and the Belfast Newspaper Library
- Use online sources and databases to find additional information on your family
- Use their years of experience as genealogists to decide which sources are best to consult or else you can specify which records you would like examined
- Write up their findings in an interpretative report explaining what records they looked at, what they found, and how these records fit into your family story
- Provide you with copies of relevant records
When filling out the form below you can specify the number of hours you would like our research team to dedicate to the Family History Report, starting from a minimum of six hours.
A minimum deposit of £150 is required before work commences and your balance will need to be paid in full before you receive the report. You can also pay for a Family History Report by instalments.
There is also an additional payment of 10% of the budget, which is paid at the end of the research, covering expenses such as:
- Costs of travel, parking, and fees charged by archives for copying documents or producing certificates
- Reproduction surcharges, if required, charged by specific archives. At present GRONI may place a surcharge between £8-£15 for certificate reproduction.
Note: VAT is applicable for UK and EU based clients.
Once the necessary archival research has been completed and the findings have been analysed by our researchers, you will receive a digital copy of your Family History Report.
If you would prefer have a hard copy of this report you can indicate this in the booking form below. There will be an additional charge to receive a hard copy and our Membership and Research Secretary will be able to advise on costs after your initial submission.
Most in-depth research takes 4–6 months to complete, but can on occasion take longer due to particular factors arising from the research. You will be advised of any delays and the reasons for them.
If your submission is urgent, please note that we do offer a fast-track service (dependent on staff scheduling) for an additional fee. Please email enquiry@uhf.org.uk for more information.
Since the Foundation’s primary expertise in research concerns the nine counties of the historic province of Ulster (Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Derry/Londonderry, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Monaghan, Tyrone), the vast majority of the archival research we undertake is carried out in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI).
If you are interested in archival research for a county that falls outside province of Ulster, please email enquiry@uhf.org.uk for advice before commissioning research online.
