John	Johnstone	1845-01-07	2	5	Death	Death of Dr. M'Dowel.--At his residence Townview, Monaghan, Jan. 2, Samuel M'Dowel, Esq., M.D., Fellow of the College of Physicians, Edinburgh, aged 77 years ; during 40 of which he discharged the important duties of Surgeon to the county Gaol and infirmary. The permanent and valuable testimonials publicly conferred upon him by the guardians of these institutions, strongly attest their sentiments of respect, admiration, and esteem; to the afflicted inmates of these asylums he was the harbinger of consolation--the dispenser of relief and comfort--soothing the lot of the wretched, and mitigating the miseries of humanity ; and oft did the faultering voice which wafted the accents of thanksgiving and adoration to the eternal throne of Grace and Mercy, commingle its holy aspirations in favour of him who was father, friend. In the walks of private life his unostentatious, yet periodic charities evinced a benevolent and humane mind, and long shall the widow and the orphan deplore the loss they have sustained. Varied as were his qualities of head and heart, (and to the lot of few was assigned the happy combination,) pre-eminently was he distinguished in the hallowed circle of domestic life--in manners bland, in address urbane, courteous and dignified, a perfect exemplification of the gentleman of "olden times"--at his festive board did he draw from his rich and diversified intellectual store, to the improvement, gratification, and delight of his guests; the professional man retired truly proud of such a member, while all vied in collation of the virtues that adorned the character, and shed a lustre upon a life full of years and of honours./"Esse, quam videri, maluet."/In accordance with a wish expressed by the deceased, his remains were borne to the grave by his brethren of the Masonic Order, amongst whom were the Rev. Mr. Murray was for many years Architect to the Board of Public Works, in which office he succeeded his relative, the late Mr. Francis Johnston. Among Mr. Murrays's works were the College of Surgeons, the District Lunatic Asylums, and several other public buildings, as well as private residences throughout Ireland. He was a member of the Royal Irish Academy, and Treasurer and Fellow of the Royal Hibernian Academy.	View

Mr.		Johnston	1851-12-13	2	2	Death	Death of Mrs. Kidd./It is our painful duty to record the demise of an amiable person, the lady of Thomas Kidd, Esq., J.P., and Chairman of the Town Commissioners, which took place at her residence in English-street, on the morning of the 9th inst., in the 45th year of her age. The deceased had been only suffering a few days, and bore her affliction with truly Christian patience and resignation to the Divine will.--The news of her departure caused universal sorrow in this city, as evidenced in the shops generally being closed, the only outward form of sympathy that could be shown for her worthy and affectionate partner and his bereaved family and friends. Very respectably descended, she was indeed an ornament to her sex--faithful in the discharge of every social duty, and jealous of the performance of every Christian obligation. Unassuming among those with whom she associated in friendly intercourse--unostentatious in the distribution of her charity to the poor; her loss is felt by all classes, but chiefly by her affectionate husband and children whom she loved with unexampled parental attachment. While in life few ladies were more generally respected--now in death none could be more universally lamented by high and low, rich and poor./The Funeral took place yesterday morning, at 10 o'clock, and was attended by a large and respectable concourse of the gentry, clergy, and merchants of this city and immediate neighbourhood besides those of her personal relatives. E. and A. Kidd, Mr. T.A. Shillington, Mr. Hugh Boyle./Doctors--Cumming, Robinson, and Brice./On arriving at St. Mark's churchyard, the procession was met by the Rev. Mr. Irwin, rector of this parish, by whom the funeral service was read in an impressive manner, and the body, (enclosed in a stuff shell coffin, covered by one of lead, and one of oak, weighing about 7 cwt.) was deposited in the vault. The whole funeral arrangements were under the superintendence of the Messrs. Frizell, of this city.	View
