Title: Friars Bush Burial Dockets
Date(s): 1888-1966
Description: By the early nineteenth century the old burial ground at Friar’s Bush on the Stranmillis Road had come to be regarded as the main graveyard for Belfast’s Catholics (though Protestants were also buried there). In 1829, it was consecrated by the Catholic bishop of Down and Connor and continued to be the principal place of interment for Catholics in Belfast until the opening of Milltown Cemetery on the Falls Road in 1869. Even so, burials continued in Friar's Bush for some time after this.
This database contains transcriptions of burial dockets for Friar's Bush. The docket authorises the sexton to open a particular grave (naming the grave-owner) by a certain time on a specific date. It includes the name and age of the deceased. The address of the deceased is usually given and occasionally other details such as names of parents and father's occupation. Other annotations include comments such as 'The coffin is very wide and large' and 'This lady died in London today. Her remains are expected to arrive by Fleetwood boat ...'.
