Our Assisted Personal Ancestral Tour is available for £700 for non-members and £650 for Ulster Historical Foundation Guild members, reflecting our commitment to supporting our membership community. The fee covers all research, planning, consultation and on-the-day expenses, including church donations and refreshments, ensuring a seamless and meaningful experience from start to finish.
This transparent, all-inclusive price means there are no hidden costs—simply arrive and enjoy a carefully curated journey into your family’s past.
Tracing your family history from afar can be exciting, but it often raises more questions than answers. Records may be incomplete, locations difficult to identify, and historic parishes or townlands hard to navigate without local expertise. Our Assisted Personal Ancestral Tour bridges that gap, turning research into a meaningful, tangible experience.
This service is helpful because it:
- Transforms research into reality
Instead of reading about your ancestors in documents, you will physically stand in the places where they lived, worked, worshipped and were laid to rest, creating a powerful emotional connection to your heritage.
- Provides expert guidance and accuracy
Irish place names, historic boundaries and local records can be complex. Our professional researchers ensure you visit the most relevant locations, avoiding guesswork and misinformation.
- Gives you insider access
We make contact with local churches, clergy and community members in advance, helping you gain entry to sites that may not be open to the public and offering opportunities for meaningful conversations.
- Saves time and stress
Planning a heritage-focused visit on your own can be overwhelming. We handle the research, route planning, scheduling and donations so you can relax and enjoy the experience.
- Enhances your genealogical knowledge
Your researcher/guide will help interpret what you see on the ground and link it to historical records, giving you a deeper understanding of your family story.
- Creates lasting memories
Walking ancestral roads, seeing old churchyards, or meeting local people connected to your family history can be profoundly moving—an experience many travellers treasure for a lifetime.
The all-inclusive fee covers:
- 1 x one hour consultation (this enables us to start planning your tour focussing on what you want to get out of the visit)
- up to 8 hours of preparatory research*
- a full day ( max. 8 hours) bespoke guided tour personalised for your ancestral journey alone
- on-the-day expenses, including church donations and refreshments (alcohol excluded)
*Should your request require more than 8 hours of research, we may recommend you consider a full research report to unlock your family story more fully before requesting a personal ancestral tour.
You will need your own vehicle and/or driver with relevant liability insurance. Our guides do not use their own vehicle for the tour. Also, travel to and from Ireland, as well as accommodation, are not included as part of this research service.
On the form below you can specify a date or several dates when you would be available to visit your ancestral homeplace.
Our Research and Membership Secretary will then be in touch to finalize arrangements to suit both you and one of our researchers.
You will be asked to provide additional information at this stage so that the researcher can prepare for your research session.
In most circumstances, this service can be delivered across all nine counties of the Province of Ulster. However, visits to certain locations—particularly Counties Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan—may require additional research, travel time, or overnight accommodation depending on the itinerary. Where this applies, any additional information or potential expenses will be discussed in advance. Our Research Secretary will be happy to advise on feasibility and costs once your booking has been received, ensuring complete clarity before arrangements are finalised.
Please note there is a maximum of two clients to a researcher. If you are part of a larger group, you will need to commission more than one researcher for your session.
If you have an urgent request, we would recommend contacting our office by calling 028 9181 2073 to check availability.
