Death
|
Death of the Earl of Gosford, G.C.B./With feelings of deep regret we have to record the demise of this justly popular nobleman, which took place at his seat, Gosford Castle, in this county, on Tuesday last. A few weeks previously his lordship had been suffering under a severe attack of gout, from which disease he recovered so as to be able to take gentle exercise, and just three weeks ago walked out with Leonard Dobbin, Esq. His lordship, however, was afflicted a second time by inflammation of the lungs and kidneys, which terminated his useful life./The family was originally of Scottish descent, being settled at Gosford, in the county of Haddington.--The first Baronet of the family, being Solicitor-General of Scotland, obtained a considerable grant of land, in the County of Armagh, from King James VI. of Scotland and I. of England, in the year 1610.--From descended Archibald Viscount Gosford, who was born in the year 1718. His son and heir, Arthur first Earl of Gosford, was raised to the Earldom in the year 1806, and expired in the following year. He was succeeded by his eldest son and heir, the late Peer, who was born in the year 1775, and consequently was about 74, at the time of his death. He married, in the year 1805, Mary, daughter of Robert Sparrow, Esq., of Worlingham, in the County of Suffolk, by whom he acquired large estates in that County. At a very early age, his Lordship became Lieutenant-Colonel of the Armagh Militia, of which regiment his father was the Colonel. In this regiment his Lordship served during the eventful year 1798, and some subsequent years; and he succeeded to the Colonelcy, on the death of his father. The Earldom was conferred by the Whigs, during their short tenur of power, in the years 1806-7. In 1830 he was appointed to a situation in the Royal Household, which appointment he held, with a short interval, until he received that of Governor-General of Canada, at a period of great excitement in that colony. In quiet and peaceful times, Lord Gosford would have been just the man for this situation; his mildness and urbanity would have gained golden opinions from all quarters; but he felt his inability to cope with the rebels, and therefore requested to be recalled./As a landlord, Lord Gosford was a model to that class. Living at home, his constant study was the comfort of his dependents, and the thriving town of Markethill is an evidence of his fostering care and anxiety to make his people happy. To his rural tenantry the deceased Earl was equally indulgent, offering every stimulus to increase their exertions, and affording the best possible opportunities for their improvement in agricultural science./The deceased Earl is succeeded in his title and estates by his son Archibald, Vicount [sic] Acheson, who is now in Malta. His Lordship was born in 1806; married, in 1832, the only daughter of the 10th Earl of Meath (she was born in 1808); he graduated at Christ Oxford; is a Deputy Lieutenant of Armagh (which County he for many years represented in Parliament), and Colonel of the Militia./In politics his lordship was a consistent liberal. By his death the situation of Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum of this county has become vacant. He sat in the Upper House as an Irish representative Peer, and as Baron Worlingham./The funeral will not take place until the arrival of his son, now Earl of Gosford.
