This report provides an indication as to the parishes and counties in the province of Ulster (includes counties Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry/Derry, Monaghan and Tyrone) where the above surname is most concentrated. This may help in providing a focus for a search in a case where only the county of origin of an ancestor is known. The results are likely to be of most value for surnames that are not very common or dispersed across Ulster.
The database is based on the 'Index to Surnames' or 'Householders Index' that was compiled by the staff of the National Library of Ireland in the 1960's. Although this Index covers surnames only and gives no precise references to the documents for the parish where the surnames appear, it does record the occurrence of properties occupied by individuals of a particular surname in each of the civil parishes of a county.
It covers the surnames of farmers (usually leaseholders) in the tithe applotment books compiled 1823-1838 and also all names of property occupiers in the printed version of the tenement valuation, known as 'Griffith Valuation', covering all properties in Ulster 1857-1864.
Whilst it records the exact number of householders in the case of the Griffith Valuation, it provides only an indication of the presence or absence of a surname in the tithe applotment books.
