In the early Nineteenth century Belfast was a growing industrial city and attracted large numbers of inward migrants looking for work. It was also a major centre of Banking, trade and commerce for the North of Ireland. Commercial travellers, and salesmen of all descriptions, frequented the city on a regular basis. This traffic necessitated a large number of Inns, Hotels and Taverns.
This list dates from 1839 and provides not only the name and address of the establishment but the name of the proprietor as well.
