Title: Portaferry Village Tithe Book, 1827
Date: 1827
Description: This database of 332 names is a list of inhabitants of the village of Portaferry in 1827 taken from the tithe book for Ballyphilip. While the tithe was a tax on agricultural land and therefore usually excluded those living in villages and towns, this database shows that there are always exemptions. Individuals were being taxed on their backyards and the database contains their names, street addresses, size of yard and the amount of tithe they were paying to the Church of Ireland. The 332 names included almost 80 names of women who were listed as householders as well as seven captains – not a surprise in such a seafaring community.
