James Orr (1770-1816) was the best-known of the weaver poets active in Ulster in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He was known as the 'Bard of Ballycarry', the village where he lived in the parish of Templecorran, County Antrim.
He was a political radical and was actively involved in the United Irishmen and the 1798 rebellion. In 1804 he published Poems on Various Subjects, to which nearly 400 men and woman, many from his own locality as well as from further afield, subscribed.
In 1831 an impressive monument was erected to his memory in Templecorran churchyard. The inscription on it describes Orr as a poet, patriot and philanthropist.
