Description: This database is based on an article by Dr George Chambers, titled 'Divided loyalties in the Business Community of Belfast in 1798', that appeared in Familia: Ulster Genealogical Review, no. 10 (1994).

The author identified a handbill in the Getty Papers in PRONI (D3695) which contained a list of 153 names (two of which appear to be duplicates) of the inhabitants of Belfast supporting an appeal by General Nugent for the recovery of six brass cannons in May 1798. This was on the eve of the outbreak of the rebellion in Ulster.

For 105 of the 151 signatories, Dr Chambers provided brief biographical sketches, which are also include in this database. The signatories included many of the leading merchants and businessmen in Belfast at this time.
