"There can be few collections of personal and family papers in public archives that do not contain items that will fascinate the researcher.
For me a case in point is a flimsy and frayed single sheet - almost certainly a handbill - on which are printed a public notice of 28 May 1798 from Major General Nugent, the military commander in Belfast at that time, and a supporting appeal of 29 May to which 151 worthies of the town had subscribed their names."
This article looks at the divisions in the Belfast business community in 1798, research spurred by a handbill found by the author.
