by Bill Birch

"My investigation of the Birch families who settled in Ulster in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was triggered after I reached a dead-end trying to establish ancestral roots for my paternal great-great-grandfather Samuel. His father’s name was James Birch which, as it turns out, is the most common forename for Birch males in Ulster, and I could trace him no further back than the 1820s to the townland of Ballydermot in the parish of Ballyscullion, County Londonderry."

This article examines the author's search to find a missing link in the Birch family's family tree.
