Shipping intelligence - news of the arrival and departure of vessels - reflected the importance of shipping at a time when world trade was growing rapidly and goods were still brought and distributed on water - by sea, river, lake and canal. The boilers of the mills in Killyleagh were powered by coal brought to the harbour owned by the local coal merchant.
