David Hayton is a professor of Early Modern Irish and british History at Queen’s university belfast. He was previously on the staff of the History of Parliament Trust, for whom he acted as principal editor of The House of Commons 1690-1715 (2002). He has published widely on Irish and British history in the period 1660-1750, and an edited collection of his essays is to appear in 2004 as Ruling Ireland: politics, politicians and parties 1685-1742. He is one of the joint editors of Irish Historical Studies.
