Dr Peadar Mac Gabhann (Peter J. Smith) is Reader in Irish at the Magee Campus of Ulster University. A native of Omagh, Peadar studied for a BA in Early Modern Irish and an MLitt in Medieval Irish at Trinity College Dublin. He pursued further studies in medieval Irish at the University of Oxford, gaining a DPhil in Celtic for his thesis on the eleventh-century historical poet, Gilla Cóemáin. His subsequent teaching and research career took him to the Universities of Bonn, Notre Dame, Oslo, and Toronto. His research interests cover a wide spectrum that extends from medieval Irish poetry to the Ulster song tradition.
