One of the first publications of the new Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, founded in 1924, was The Drennan Letters (1931), edited by the Deputy Keeper Dr D.A. Chart. William Drennan, a founder of the United Irishmen in 1791, and of Belfast Academical Institution in 1810, acquitted in 1794 on a charge of sedition, was remembered by some as a literary man, part of an Ulster Enlightenment, and by others as a political radical, a Protestant nationalist.
