by Charles A. McClatchey

"There are many people today whose interest has been aroused by the thought of learning more of their ancestry. Interest has been steadily growing to get to know something of our past, who we are, where we come from, what were the occupations of our forefathers and do we even perhaps have an interesting skeleton in our cupboard?

Did our ancestors travel great distances in the most hazardous conditions and, having survived the journey, were they met with ferocious hostility and then, having established themselves, did they perhaps eventually become captains of industry or banking or the forerunners of our modern communications network of newspaper, radio and television?"

In this article, the author gives his personal experience of researching his own family name.
