by Hugh Farren

Born in Derry, died in France, fighting for New Zealand

"This is the story of my uncle and namesake, Hugh Farren. He was born and grew up with his two brothers on a small farm in Boviel near Dungiven in County Londonderry.

The land was unable to support all three and so as a young man, after a spell of work in Scotland, he emigrated to New Zealand. He was seeking a new life full of adventure, promise and opportunity. But the outbreak of the First World War changed all that.

After just three years working in New Zealand, he was conscripted into the New Zealand army and was killed in action in France in 1918 a few weeks before the end of the war.

He is buried in a Commonwealth War Cemetery in northern France."
