Family history, whether it is of our own background or an activity which has been commissioned by someone else, is essentially a foray into the unknown for if the ‘facts’ were fully known there would be no need for the research.
The availability of internet databases has enabled a revolution in the way in which such forays take place and in the quality of the results. The story outlined in this article began as a genealogical quest but the experiences of those who were the key players throw some light on the momentous times in which they lived, the period between 1885–1922.
