Ken McGilloway was born in the Waterside area ofDerry in 1940 and educated at the Waterside Boys’ School and the Christian Brothers Brow of theHillSchool,Derry. He left school at the age of 16 to become a trainee window dresser in a local furniture store. Six years later he moved on to become manager of a new textile shop in the city, eventually becoming manager of their Coleraine branch as well. After another 13 years he decided the time had arrived to became his own boss. In 1973, McGilloway Fabrics opened inButcher Street,Derry.
He had always been interested in art and, in the mid-1980s, fulfilled another long-held ambition by opening theMcGillowayArtGalleryinShipquay Street,Derry. He retired from business in July 2010.
