by John H. McGuckin, Jr

"On 12 May 1864, Sergeant Edward McGuckin died during the bloody Union army assault on Confederate positions at Spottsylvania Courthouse, one of a series of battles fought in Virginia in the spring of 1864.

So great was the carnage on the battlefield that the Union army failed to identify Edward's body or list him as killed in action until his wife petitioned for a pension to support their young son Hugh."

This article looks at Sergeant Edward McGuckin, and uses that information to obtain something of a personal view of one Irish immigrant family in the New World during the mid-nineteenth century.
