In June 2024, scholars from both sides of the Atlantic gathered for the twenty-fourth Ulster American Heritage Symposium to consider the question of how the migrant journey was accomplished, focusing on the key concepts of leaving, crossing and arriving.
This volume contains 18 essays based on the papers given at the Symposium which explore a chronologically, geographically and thematically diverse range of subjects that go beyond traditional narratives to ask new questions.
There is an emphasis on the ‘in-betweenness’ of migration and the migrant experience – and the strategies, networks and processes which shaped them. As many of the essays indicate, movements were not always successful or straightforward.
Together, the essays highlight the value of source material and research methods and what these can tell us about the human experience of migration in strikingly personal ways.
