by Arthur Bell
"With an English mother and an Ulster-Scots father I have always felt that I am not completely one or the other.
Despite living in and around Belfast all my life, supporting Ulster and Irish rugby and enjoying our rich culture and beautiful scenery I am conscious of the deep English roots I have from my mother. My sons, educated in Belfast, now live in London close to where their ancestors lived. This has encouraged my interest.
However, research into my family history has not simplified my own self perception; if anything it has added greatly to the complexity."
This article follows the author as he looks back into the rich history of his own family, and how his research adds to the complexity of his own self-perception.
