Charlotte Riddell (née Cowan) was born in Carrickfergus, County Antrim in 1832, daughter of a landowner by his
second marriage. After her father’s death in 1851, Charlotte and her mother lived for some time in reduced
circumstances in Dundonald, County Down before moving to London in 1855, where Charlotte gradually
developed a career as a prolific professional novelist.
