Some Preliminary Observations
"In October 1983 the History Department of the New University of Ulster initiated a project aimed at compiling an accurate, comprehensive guide to the parish registers deposited in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (hereafter P.R.O.N.I.).
This involved an examination of the records for almost 1,000 parishes, congregations and circuits, most of which lay within the borders of the nine county province of Ulster. The work is now in its final stages and will shortly be prepared for publication.
In the course of the project it emerged that Church of Ireland parish registers compiled before civil registration in 1845 (for marriages) and 1864 (for baptisms and burials) were more accurately and systematically kept than has generally been accepted.”
